GRAB SOME COFFEE AND A NOTEBOOK- YOU WON'T REGRET IT.
I've got some major knowledge bombs to drop on you.
I’m Laura, pediatric Occupational Therapist and Mom to Liliana, my 5 year old neurodivergent, sensory sensitive little girl.
No one gets it more than I do.
I used to envy my friends at playdates who would get to casually chat and sip their coffee while their confident, independent children would be playing and frolicking across the room.
I spent most of the playdates managing my daughter’s meltdowns from the messy play area or handling her big emotions when it came to loud sounds and too many people.
Often times I didn’t even make it to the playdate because we were on the 3rd meltdown of the morning.
She didn’t “check enough boxes” in order to get OT on her own, which I would have wanted. But instead. I played OT mom at home.
It's been almost 4 years of our "work" at home and I'm still in awe at how far we've come.
Can I tell you a secret? I don't do anything super fancy with her, and I'm not providing hours of private OT-mom therapy.
I did take what I knew as an OT to offer her calming daily strategies that were super simple to do, AND offered her playful practice sessions with achievable steps that she didn’t feel overwhelmed in.
It all boils down to 2 focus points to be successful in helping your child overcome their sensory triggers:
- Finding simple, easy to implement sensory strategies that you can implement DAILY (without feeling overwhelmed)
- Finding a balanced, fun way to practice through play
